5.2.2 Applications of OCT

Recently,OCT has been widely used in dermatology, gastroenterology, urology, gynecology and neurosurgery, etc.,especially in the detection and diagnosis of dermatosis, due to its advantages such as non-injury,non-invasive,high resolution, simple structure, and simple portability.Although histopathology is the gold standard and currently the most reliable clinical diagnosis technique in dermatology,it is a traumatic inspection method and is difficult to inspect one by one for multiple pigmented skin lesions. It is benefit that OCT is able to help diagnose and delineate lesions, identify subclinical lesions, and accurately assess their thickness. This structural change can be used to diagnose different types of skin tumors. So far,the greatest potential of OCT lies in the diagnosis and treatment of nonmelanoma skin cancers(NMSCs)in dermatology, especially basal cell carcinoma.Besides, pigmented skin lesions still face great challenges in OCT.In the diagnosis of melanoma,OCT is not as accurate as dermoscope or reflectance confocal microscopy(RCM).The reason is that melanin is a strong scatterer of light, and images of pigmented skin lesions such as melanoma and pigmented moles have been proven difficult to obtain through light penetration-based techniques.(https://www.daowen.com)
