5.5.2.1 Measuring melanoma thicknesses

Thickness measurement is critical in the diagnosis of melanoma.Besides, tumor thicknesses are associated with different prognoses and treatment procedures. In 2006,Oh et al.imaged skin melanomas in vivo by using a table-top photoacoustic microscopy system. The results showed that both the top and bottom boundaries of the melanoma phantoms could be detected(Figure 5-10).In addition, the measured thicknesses of the melanoma phantoms agreed well with the known values. To broaden the applicability to various anatomical sites,Oh et al.developed a hand-held photoacoustic microscopy system that could image melanomas in all tumor classifications, which is highly promising for clinical studies.(https://www.daowen.com)
