3.4 Exploring a Diversified Third-front Constructi...
3.4.1 Several Types of Third-front Construction Museums
The museum is one of the important modes of industrial heritage preservation and utilization, which is the consensus at home and abroad. There are many types of industrial museums that are directly related to the conservation of industrial heritage.Several third-front construction museums(such as Panzhihua China Third-front Construction Museum,Duyun Third-front Construction Museum, and Guang'an Third-front Construction Exhibition Hall),which are currently established in the western region, are still constructed and operated in accordance with the traditional museum model.Guizhou Third-front Construction Museum was built on the former site of the southwest third-front construction headquarter of Liupanshui Shuicheng Ancient Town, with indoor and outdoor exhibitions. The Zunyi Third-front Construction Exhibition Hall in Zunyi 1964 Cultural and Creative Park and the Chongqing Industrial Museum in Chongqing Industrial Expo Park,as a part of the entire park, are built on the original sites of the industrial heritage. These museums are integrated with the surrounding environment and always keep up with the international development trend of industrial museum.
3.4.2 Industrial Eco-Museum and Community Museum(https://www.daowen.com)
It is also advisable to establish third-front industry eco-museums or community museums. The latter has already emerged, such as Lanjian Mine Community Museum in Panzhihua East District.Small as it is,the exhibition hall has all the vital organs of a community museum. It is built, managed and operated by the community residents, and the retirees who once experienced the third-front construction are voluntary docents.Generally, community museum's size and strength are both limited, but any mountain can be famous with the presence of an immortal, and any museums can be popular with the presence of uniqueness.Uniqueness is the talisman for a community museum. It engages in the life of the community residents and continuously enhances the residents'sense of participation, identity and acquisition, and fosters cultural selfconfidence, which is an effective form to promote the preservation and utilization of the third-front industrial heritage.
As for the eco-museum,reviewing the history of the International Eco-Museum,the French Creusot-Montceau Ecological Museum, once regarded as a successful sample of the International Eco-Museum Movement,is a typical industrial eco-museum which is originally called“the Museum of Man and Industry,Le Creusot-Montceau-les-Mines”[8],highlighting the museum's feature of conserving and utilizing industrial heritage and overall protecting human ecology and natural ecology. At present, there are dozens of eco-museums in China, and even“eco-museum groups”(such as Zhejiang Anji),but none is industrial-oriented.The third-front industrial heritage,as a witness of industrial civilization,is normally distributed in mountain areas with abundant agricultural remains and good natural ecology. All of these could be the foundation for building an industrial ecological museum. However, the theoretical researches and practice on the construction of the third-front industrial eco-museum is still blank in the academia. We will discuss the overall relationship between the ecomuseum and the third-front industrial heritage conservation, explore its construction and operation mechanism, and finally propose a feasibility and operability plan for constructing third-front eco-museum via analyzing and researching on the characteristics of the existing industrial museums and ecomuseums.
