American Enlightenment of General Education from the“Student-centered”Perspective

Abstract:The combination of general education and professional education is the direction in deepening and optimizing the reform of general education.In the“studentcentered”reform,higher education researchers and practitioners are very concernedabout how to balance professional education and general education.This paper first outlines the evolution of general education in the United States in the past century:from the coexistence of general education and professional education,to the balance between general education and professional education,then to the integration of general education and professional education.Secondly,this paper analyses the characteristics of five first-class universities in the United States after the new round of general education reform:1.Pursuing excellence,serving the society and remolding the value concept of general education;2.Cross-disciplinary,inclusive,and re-integration of general education and professional education;3.Paying equal attention to arts and science,consolidating the foundation,and reorganizing the curriculum system of general education.Finally,this paper reveals the enlightenment of American general education from the“student-centered”perspective:On the basis of student development,we should build a general education value concept system to shape core values.Oriented towards student learning,we should establish a general education curriculum system to encourage learning.Aiming at learning outcomes,we should establish an educational management system to implement scientific assessment and collaborative optimization.
